Third Annual Hoops for Hunger Game Set for Wednesday

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Nearly 2,500 children from surrounding Mid-Michigan school districts will make their way to McGuirk Arena Wednesday, Dec. 5 as the Chippewas take on Green Bay for the third annual Hoops for Hunger event.

In the weeks leading up to the event, 13 area schools have been collecting non-perishable canned and boxed food, personal care items and cash donations. Participating schools' donations will be weighed and the winner will be presented with the Hoops for Hunger Food-Drive Championship Trophy during halftime.

Last year's efforts collected more than 51,000 lbs. of food from attending schools, CMU Registered Student Organizations and community members, which equaled about 34,300 meals.

All of the food donated will go to the Greater Lansing Food Bank which in turn is distributed through an extensive network of food pantries and community kitchens located throughout the greater Lansing area. In July the Greater Lansing Food Bank and Mid-Michigan Food Bank merged to become one organization feeding those in need in seven counties including Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Shiawassee, Gratiot, Clare and Isabella.

Fans, students and members of the community are encouraged to join CMU athletics in the fight against hunger in Michigan by bringing non-perishable food items to Wednesday's match-up. A donation drop-off table will be located in the atrium of McGuirk Arena beginning at 11 a.m.

The Montabella school district has won the competition the past two years raising approximately 20,000 lbs. of food in total.

The event kicks-off with 9&10 News reporting live from McGuirk Arena from 6 -8:45 a.m. Tipoff is scheduled for noon.
