No. 11 Chippewas Finish 1-2 at Northeast Duals

TROY, N.Y. - The No. 11 Central Michigan wrestling team went 1-2 at the Northeast Duals Saturday, defeating Hofstra and falling to No. 8 Cornell and No. 10 Oklahoma.

Seniors Scottie Sentes, Ben Bennett and Jarod Trice each went undefeated on the day as Sentes earned a pair of wins over ranked opponents, Bennett a pair of major decisions and Trice a pair of decisions. Junior Craig Kelliher also went 2-0 in his season debut at 174 pounds, while sophomore Anthony Bill gave the Chippewas a 3-0 record at 174 with a decision versus Hofstra.

Senior Christian Cullinan continued his strong performance on the season despite dropping his opening match, going 2-1 on the day with a win over 2012 All-American and No. 10 ranked Steve Bonnano of Hofstra.

"We could have had some better results today," head coach Tom Borrelli said. "We wrestled hard but we dropped a few close matches that turned the two losses against us. I liked the way we competed today and I think in time with some changes to what we've seen today we can be a much tougher team in a few months."

The Chippewas (2-2) opened the day with a hard-fought 17-15 loss to the No. 8 Big Red despite splitting the 10 matches, 5-5. The Big Red were able to use bonus points at 165 and 197 pounds to edge the Chippewas, handing them their first loss of the season.

After senior Cullinan fell in the opening match at 125 pounds, Sentes earned a 7-1 decision over Bricker Dixon to tie the match, 3-3. The Big Red then won four of the next five, capped by a major decision from three-time national champion and No. 1 ranked Kyle Dake over No. 18 sophomore Mike Ottinger, 14-2.

Kelliher made his season debut at 174 pounds with a 7-3 decision over Duke Pickett and Bennett pulled CMU within a point with an 8-2 decision over Craig Scott. Bennett was nearly tied the dual at 13-13, but was unable to earn the final takedown he needed in the third period for the major decision.

Trice was able to win a 2-1 overtime decision over Stryker Lane at heavyweight, but needed a fall after Jackson Lewis fell in a major decision to Jace Bennett, 17-4, at 197 pounds.

The Maroon and Gold were able to get back on the winning track with a 24-9 victory over Hofstra in their second dual of the day, getting bonus points from Bennett and sophomore Dakota Cooley.

Cullinan opened the dual with 6-1 decision over Bonnano to earn the upset before Sentes earned his second decision over a ranked opponent by defeating No. 17 Jamie Franco, 8-2.

After a pair of wins by the Pride tied the match, 6-6, Cooley gave the Chippewas a 10-6 lead  with a 13-0 major decision over Jay Lysne at 157 pounds. Ottinger and Bill then earned back-to-back decisions before Bennett won by technical fall at the 6:14 mark for bonus points and a 20-6 CMU advantage.

Lewis gave the Chippewas their final victory of the dual versus the Pride, defeating Tim Murphy, 6-0.

CMU closed the day with a tough loss to the No. 10 Sooners in a match that could have easily swung in the Chippewas' favor.

Cullinan opened things up with a 8-5 decision over Kyle Garcia to give the Chippewas' a 3-0 lead. Momentum then turned in the Sooners' favor, however, as they recorded back-to-back pins followed by a pair of overtime victories at 149 and 157 pounds to grab an 18-3 advantage.

Another decision by Oklahoma's No. 7 Bubby Graham over Ottinger pushed CMU's deficit to 21-3, but Kelliher and Bennett were able to claim back-to-back majors and Trice earned a 7-2 decision to make it a 24-14 final.

The Chippewas return to action next Saturday when they open Mid-American Conference play at Ohio for a 7 p.m. dual versus the Bobcats.
