MOUNT PLEASANT – Dan
LeFevour completed 13-of-16 passes for 115 yards and Antonio Brown
scored on throws from LeFevour and Brian Brunner to lead the offense to
a 45-42 win over the defense in Central Michigan’s spring football game
Saturday night.
The scrimmage, which marked the end of spring practice for the
Chippewas, utilized a modified scoring system that rewarded the defense
for creating turnovers and forcing the offense into punts and negative
plays.
LeFevour threw incompletions on the scrimmage’s first two plays, and
the defense forced a three-and-out to take a 2-0 lead after the
scrimmage’s first series.
On third-and-three on the next series, however, Brown turned a swing pass from Brunner into a 58-yard touchdown.
LeFevour, who would complete nine straight and 13 of his final 14
attempts, hooked up with Rocky Weaver for a 39-yard touchdown on the
next series. Weaver absorbed a hit after making the catch and ran into
the end zone. Andrew Aguila’s point-after extended the offense’s lead
to 18-2.
A three-and-out on the next possession cut the offense’s lead to 18-4 following the first segment of the scrimmage.
The second segment of the scrimmage began with the ball placed at
midfield. A missed field goal on the first possession of the segment
drew the defense to within 21-10.
The ensuing series saw the offense record three first downs before
Brunner connected with Brown for a 6-yard score that boosted the
offense’s lead to 31-11.
The third and final drive from midfield was capped by a 36-yard field
goal by Aguila. A sack earlier in the series, and the fact that the
defense held the offense to a field goal in the red zone, made the
score 33-15.
A series of individual drills pulled the defense with 13 points, 37-24.
The ball was then moved to the 30-yard line for the final segment of
the scrimmage, and the defense sliced the deficit to single digits by
forcing a pair of negative yardage plays and limiting the offense to a
44-yard Aguila field goal.
The ensuing possession saw the offense record one first down before
Vince Agnew intercepted a pass from Steve Beltowski. Agnew’s
interception pulled the defense within five points, 39-34, and the
difference would be cut to one point when the defense came up with a
fourth-down stop on the final series.
The final portion of the scrimmage featured one-on-one drills between
the offensive and defensive linemen. The offense won six of the 10
individual matchups to claim the 45-42 victory.
