ROCHESTER, Mich. -- In its second-to-last tune up before the Mid-American Conference Championships, the Central Michigan University men’s cross country team had some standout performances at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships on Friday. Oakland University hosted teams from around the state for both 4K and 8K races at Katke-Cousins Golf Course.

CMU placed first of three Division I teams in the 8K race and second of two teams in the 4K.

“I was impressed with a lot of our guys today,” coach Craig Fuller said. “It might have been the best race we’ve had in a long time. It looks like we might be able to pull something out for the MAC championships in a few weeks.”

CMU scored 20 points to win the 8K while Detroit scored 40 and Oakland 70.

The Chippewas finished 1-2-3 with Riak Mabil finishing the loop in 26:25, Sammy Kiprotich in 26:39 and Cory Arnold 26:42. Also scoring were Dan Cramer in sixth (27:09) and Adam Richmond eighth (27:18).

In the 4K which scored just four runners per team, Oakland finished first with 14 points and CMU was second with 27.

Donnie Richmond placed first with a time of 12:27. Other CMU runners were Scott Barnes in seventh (12:57), Wade Buchs ninth (13:13) and Abraham Mach 10th (13:17).

“It was a hot day and a difficult, slow, hilly course,” Fuller said. “I thought we ran well and we’re looking forward to getting some guys back next week.”

Three of CMU’s top runners did not compete this weekend -- returning All-MAC selection Matt Loiselle, Jacob Korir and Andrew Manning.

CMU hopes to have them in the lineup when the Chippewas travel to the Great American Cross Country Festival next Saturday, Oct. 13, in Birmingham, Alabama.
