ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Central Michigan softball team opened its season up with a win against Drake Friday at the Rosemont Rumble, edging the Bulldogs 1-0.
Central Michigan (1-0) took the lead against Drake (0-2) in the bottom of the second inning when Trista Cox hit her 12th career homerun. The junior continued where she left off last season when she belted the game-winner out of the park in the MAC Tournament Championship game.
Cox’s homer would be the lone run for the Chippewa's Friday night, but the Maroon and Gold’s solid defense would keep Drake scoreless through all seven innings.
Center fielder Lauren Bowman played well on defense and also recorded a hit for the Chippewas in the bottom of the third, but got called out at second at the next at bat when the senior was caught stealing.
“I thought Lauren played really well defensively and got a hit for us, so she had an excellent game,” Jonker said. “In the outfield she got a great jump on the ball and read the ball off the bat well.”
Senior Chelsea Sundberg pitched all seven innings for the Chippewas allowing only three hits and striking out six.
“I was excited at how well Chelsea pitched, for our first outing” coach Margo Jonker said. “I was also impressed at how well our defense played.”
Central Michigan continues tournament play tomorrow when it takes on Drake for a second time at 11:30 a.m. and Illinois-Chicago at 2 p.m.
