No. 25 CMU Hosts Special Night, But Falls to No. 23 Stanford, 18-13

Mount Pleasant, Mich. - Central Michigan was unable to come away with a victory over No. 23 Stanford on a special night Monday as former NCAA Champion Casey Cunningham was honored and had his singlet raised to the rafters of McGuirk Arena.

The No. 25 Chippewas (2-2) claimed just four of the ten matches, falling to the Cardinal (6-1), 18-13.

Cunningham, a 1999 NCAA champion at 157 pounds, was honored between the 133-pound and 141-pound matches with a commemorative video played to the crowd and the raising of his singlet to the rafters.

The night started at 184 pounds and the Cardinal claimed three-straight matches to claim a 9-0 lead. Redshirt freshman Corey Keener put the Chippewas on the board with a 11-4 decision over Tommy Pawelski.

Senior Joe Roth battled No. 3 Ryan Mango from start to finish, but dropped a tough 3-2 decision, but sophomore Zach Horan quickly improved to 9-0 on the season with a 14-5 major decision over Peter Russo to pull CMU within 12-7.

Senior Scott Mattingly gave CMU two-straight victories with a convincing 7-1 decision over Max Hvolbek, taking advantage of the match with a takedown just as time expired in the first period.

Unfortunatley, the Cardinal won the next two matches to secure the victory. Junior Mike Ottinger dominated the final match of the night at 174 pounds, earning four takedowns in the final two periods for a 11-5 decision.

CMU is back in action at the Northeast Duals on Saturday, Nov. 30 where it will battle Lehigh, North Carolina and Sacred Heart.
