Mount Pleasant, Mich.- Central Michigan swept day two of the Hoosier Classic with victories over Michigan State and Wright State.
Central Michigan (12-10) took an early lead against the Spartans (14-13), scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Macy Merchant opened the inning with a triple to right field, her fourth extra base hit of the season. Senior Summer Knoop reach on an error, and then stole second base to put runners on second and third with one out. Sophomore Carol Ann Sexauer hit her seventh double of the year to score Merchant and Knoop, giving the Chippewas a 2-0 advantage.
After junior Karly Hansen struck out, freshman Taylor Waters reached first base on a walk in the fifth inning, and was advanced to second by a bunt laid down by Merchant. With two outs, Knoop singled up the middle to score Waters, extending Central Michigan’s lead to 3-0.
Senior Kara Dornbos pitched a complete game, earning her second shut out of the season, and 17th of her career, tying her for eighth in program history with Heidi McLane (1985-88). Dornbos gave up six hits and struck out six batters.
Sexauer finished with a game-high two RBIs. Knoop added one RBI and a run, going 1-2 at the plate. Merchant went 2-3, and scored one run.
Jayme O’Bryant led Michigan State with two hits on the afternoon. Kelly Smith pitched a complete game, surrendering three earned runs and striking out four Chippewas.
Central Michigan edged out the Raiders (3-14) in game two of the day, 3-2. Wright State led 2-1 entering the sixth inning, but its lead was short lived, thanks to a two-run double by freshman Katelyn Renstchler.
Knoop got the sixth inning started with a double to left, her fourth double on the season. Sexauer knocked a single to center, and moving to second on the throw, advancing the runner to third. With one out, Rentschler hit a double to right center to put the Chippewas up 3-2.
After three scoreless innings, the Chippewas struck first in the top of the fourth inning with a Sexauer homerun to left field, her third of the season.
Wright State answered in the fifth though with two runs, taking a 2-1 advantage. Kortney Tackett opened the inning with a single to left field. Later in the inning with two outs, Angie Clark walked to load the bases for the Raiders. Jess Gorman followed with a single to right to score two runs.
Rentschler led Central Michigan with two RBIs, bring her season total to 13. Sexauer finished 2-3 at the plate with a homerun. She is batting .353 on the year, and leads the Chippewas with 17 RBIs. Junior Morgan Yunkcer started in the circle, pitching 6.1 innings and giving up two earned runs. Junior Chelsea Sundberg earned her second save on the season, giving up no hits and striking out one batter in 0.2 innings of work.
Gorman finished with two RBIs and one hit for Wright State. Tackett, Kaitlyn Kite, Kristi Boreing and Taylor Knore each added one hit to the cause. Montana Wear pitched 6.0 innings for the Raiders, striking out three batters and giving up three earned runs. Krystian DeWitt gave up two hits and no runs in 1.0 inning.
Central Michigan's final game of the Hoosier Classic against Wright State, scheduled for March 17, has been cancelled due to cold temps and snow. The Chippewas will be back in action on March 27 for a double header at IPFW. Central Michigan will be looking for redemption after dropping an extra innings contest to the Mastodons earlier this season at the USF Under Armour Tournament, 10-6.
