Chippewas Come Up Short In Opening Doubleheader

Mount Pleasant, Mich.- Central Michigan dropped a pair of heartbreakers on Friday on the opening day of the Hoosier Classic, 3-2 to UIC and 2-1 to host Indiana.

The Flames (5-15) trailed heading into the top of the sixth inning, and put up two runs in the final two innings to top Central Michigan (10-10) 3-2. In the sixth, Jacki Fletcher singled to second base and advanced to second on a walk that put Erica Hampton on first. Courtney Heeley put down a sac-bunt to advance the runners and Natalie Hernandez scored Fletcher with a single to leftfield, tying the game at 2-2.

UIC's Kara Komp opened the seventh inning with a single to the shortstop. She was advanced to second by Melissa Preish, and then to third on a walk placing Jenna Marsalli on first. Fletcher then reached on a CMU fielding error, scoring Komp from third to put the Flames up 3-2.

UIC jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning on a RBI single by Swan to centerfield, scoring Komp from second.

The Chippewas responded with two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman first baseman Katelyn Rentschler reached base with a single to leftfield. She advanced to second on walk placing junior Raechel Zahrn on first. Junior Lauren Bowman came in to pinch run for Rentschler, and advanced to third when senior Brogan Darwin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Macy Merchant hit into a fielder’s choice, leaving Bowman out at home for the second out. With runners in scoring position, senior Summer Knoop hit a two-run single to short.

Knoop led Central Michigan with two RBIs. Senior Kara Dornbos started in the circle for the Chippewas, pitching 5.1 innings giving up two earned runs. Junior Kirsten Kuhlman pitched 2.1 innings surrendering three hits to take the loss.

Hernandez led the Flames at the plate, going 3-4 with an RBI. Preish finished the game with two hits. Devin Miller pitched a complete game for UIC, striking out six batters and giving up two earned runs.

In game two of the day, Central Michigan’s comeback efforts came up short, falling to Indiana 2-1.

The Hoosiers (14-13) scored one run in the bottom of the first inning on a one-out homerun over the centerfield wall by Amanda Wagner.

Indiana added to their lead in the fifth with another homerun, this time by Brianna Meyer.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, junior Brittney Horan doubled to center field. She was brought home by Cox’s single to the middle.

Cox led the Chippewas with one RBI and finished 2-1 at the plate. Junior Chelsea Sundberg pitched a complete game, striking out five Hoosiers and giving up two earned runs.

Meyer and Wagner each homered for Indiana. Wagner finished 2-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run. Lora Olson pitched a complete game, striking out five batters and gave up four hits.

Central Michigan will be back in action tomorrow at the Hoosier Classic against Michigan State and Wright State. First pitch against the Spartans is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. Game two against the Raiders is scheduled for 7 p.m.
