Chippewas Gain Strength at Jack Skoog Invite

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan track and field squads strengthened their competition armies at the Jack Skoog Invite Friday as they prepare to head into the battle that is the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships next weekend.

"It's like you're going into battle, and knowing you have more weapons to fire, you should have more confidence heading out," Director of Track and Field Willie Randolph said.

One of those new battle pieces is junior Michael Johnson who qualified in the triple jump with a mark of 46-00.75, topping his previous personal record by more than three feet.

"It's great to get it flowing right before conference championships. Going into that big of a meet, it's setting the bar high and setting the tone for what is to come," said Johnson.

Two more athletes who are in contention to compete at the MAC Indoor Championships are freshmen long jumpers Shaya Wilkerson and Markala Goodson. Both jumped personal bests, tying at 18-01.5. Wilkerson was awarded first on a judge's decision.

Wilkerson also won the women's triple jump with a mark of 38-02.00.

Freshman Craig Mauldin, who already qualified in the triple jump, increased his chances to help bring in points for the team next weekend by qualifying 22-06.25 in the long jump. If the standings hold, Mauldin's new personal best will move him into contention for Championship competition.

Throwers junior Calvin Jackson and senior Alex Rose finished second and third, respectively, in the men's weight throw. Jackson threw a 58-02.00, while Rose threw a 57-00.00, a new personal best.

Freshman Devene Brown finished first in both the weight throw and shot put. She threw a 51-00.00 in the weight throw, and a 45-08.5 in the shot put.

Seniors Jason Drudge and Charnele Lyons also won their respective events. Drudge won the men's 3000m race with a time of 8:57.81. Lyons won the women's mile with a time of 5:05.32.

"We are focused on moving forward with a positive energy. The team, the supporters and those competing, they gave everything they had for each other. So the marks came, but the bottom line is that the support and work put in together aided these improvements," Randolph said.

Friday night also marked Senior Night for the Chippewas. They honored Veronica Garcia, Misha Lamphere, Charnele Lyons, Kayla Brindley, Emily Dienhart, Jackie McEnhill and Maddie Ribant on the women's side. Jason Drudge, Nathan Sanchez and Matt Lutzke were recognized for the men.

These seniors will be looking to help lead their teammates heading into the 2013 MAC Indoor Championships.
