Offensive Surge Lifts CMU Past IUPUI, 15-6

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Central Michigan earned a big win on the closing day of the Cardinal Classic Sunday, using an offensive outburst in the fourth inning to beat IUPUI, 15-6.

The Chippewas (8-6) found themselves down in the third inning after giving up four runs and three hits to IUPUI (5-6).

The Maroon and Gold answered in the fourth inning, scoring seven of its 15 runs. The rally started when Chelsea DeLamielleure blasted a three-run homer, bringing in Trista Cox and Raechel Zahrn to pull the Chippewas within one at 4-3. Cory DeLamielleure added a home run of her own with a solo shot to right center to knot the game at 4-4.

The scoring continued when Evelyn Lorimer singled through the right side, bringing in freshman Rachael Knapp to put the Chippewas on top 5-3. Redshirt freshman Kristen Goodall came in to pinch hit for Zahrn and produced two RBI off a single through the right side to give CMU the 7-3 advantage.

The Jaguars added one more run in the fifth inning to pull within three at 7-4.

Central Michigan had another big offensive inning in the sixth, starting with a Cox RBI to bring in Lorimer to put the Chippewas up three at 8-5. A Katelyn Rentschler single up the middle then plated Cox. Cory DeLamielleure also added a single up the middle to bring in one more to put the Maroon and Gold up 10-5. Freshman Danielle Marlink came up big during her at-bat with a double to right center, scoring two more. Kristen Kuhlman capped off the inning, coming home on a wild pitch, giving CMU a 13-5 advantage.

The Jaguars added its final score of the game in the sixth inning, trailing 13-6 heading into the seventh inning.

The Chippewas' offensive success did not stop in the seventh inning, as they added two more runs off a Cory DeLamielleure double to right center, which brought in Cox and Zahrn.

Knapp (3-1) earned the win for the Chippewas, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up five hits, five runs and striking out seven.

Central Michigan will take a weekend off before heading to Florida for the USF Under Armour Showcase, beginning Friday, March 7.
