Katie Canning, who joined head coach Jerry Reighard’s staff in the fall of 2012, helped Central Michigan continue its winning ways in her first season, as the Chippewas captured their fourth straight MAC championship and advanced to the NCAA regionals for the fifth consecutive year.

Canning’s primary coaching responsibility was overseeing the team’s efforts in the vault. In 2013, each of the six gymnasts that competed in the vault either tied or established career highs and, as a team, scored above the 49.000 threshold on three occasions, including a season best 49.275 at the Illinois-Michigan Challenge. Three of Canning vaulter’s, Kirsten Petzold (No. 2), Meaghan McWhorter (No. 8), and Brittany Petzold (No. 10), finished the regulars season ranked in the top 10 in the MAC.

Canning came to CMU following a distinguished collegiate career at Temple University in Philadelphia.

After sitting out her junior year while rehabilitating a torn labrum, Canning returned strong for her senior season in 2012. She captured the ECAC all-around title with the highest score earned by an Owl gymnast in program history (39.200) and tied for the conference crown in the floor exercise and balance beam, earning First Team All-ECAC honors. Canning also qualified as a reserve for the NCAA Championships. For her standout season, she was selected as the Novocare Comeback Student-Athlete of the Year.

As a sophomore, Canning tied for second in the balance beam at the ECAC Championships and collected First Team All-USAG All-America honors (balance beam).

In 2009, Canning excelled in her freshman campaign, claiming first place in the all-around and vault and placing second in the floor exercise at the USAG Championships to earn All-America honors. She also won the balance beam title in her first ECAC Championships appearance.

Canning, a native of Billerica, Mass., graduated with Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology – exercise science from Temple in May 2012.
